Here’s an exciting new opening for you: Michael Tan, the friendly barista behind the bar of Kuala Lumpur’s RAW Coffee (now defunct) and Singapore’s Common Man Coffee Roasters, has returned with his own café.

Called Alpha Brew Coffee, Tan plans to serve his style of coffee — which means awesome conversation alongside a good cuppa — influenced by his years of training with Kiwi-born Michael Wilson (RAW Coffee and Artisan Roast) and Perth native Harry Grover (Common Man Coffee Roasters and 40 Hands).

Head to the busy neighbourhood of Sri Petaling in Kuala Lumpur as Three Little Birds Coffee opens their third permanent outlet. The twist this round is a shared space with Malaysian ice cream artisan Inside Scoop. So enjoy the usual finely crafted cuppas made from single origin coffee beans with a scoop or two of ice cream (the D24 Durian and XO Cranberry are two crowd favourites).

Three Little Birds Coffee head honcho Joey Mah will introduce specialty hot chocolate made with Seniman Kakao’s 80% cocoa chocolate from Lam Dong, Vietnam. The indie F&B scene in Kuala Lumpur just got that much more exciting.

This Saturday, seasoned café-hopping duo Sujian Khor and Chris Yap launch their maiden F&B effort with Wild Sheep Chase, their vision of a Taiwanese-inspired dessert café. Fans of novelist Haruki Murakami may recognise the name as the title of one his books; close friends would have heard Yap affectionately calling Khor his “Sayang” (which in Mandarin sounds like “Silly Sheep”).
