Drury Lane, Singapore

By Kenny Mah and CK Lim

Coffee is hard to miss.

You couldn’t even if you tried. Not only is Drury Lane the only café along Tanjong Pagar Road with a red door; its entire storefront is a bright fire-engine red.

Inside however, the ambiance is more laidback. Customers wait patiently for their double-shot lattes and long blacks to go. Baristas are brisk but not unfriendly. Next to the coffee bar, a semi-open kitchen offers a view of brunch orders being whipped up.

Upstairs there is ample space, sunlight and an even more unhurried pace. Drury Lane makes a decent argument for being an ideal café to relax and have a conversation or enjoy a good book.

Our coffees arrive, and they are awesome. An immaculate cappuccino and a filter brew (beans roasted by Copenhagen’s Coffee Collective): some of the best we’ve had in Singapore.

The food more than keeps up with the coffee. Eggs Benedict is given a Nanyang twist with creamy salted egg yolk and grilled prawns on top of steamed mantou buns. Singapore’s national dish of chilli crab is turned into a pasta sauce; add wilted kale pasta and a poached egg, and you have a quite a meal.

And oh, in case you were wondering, the name Drury Lane comes from an old English nursery rhyme, The Muffin Man:

“Do you know the muffin man? The muffin man, the muffin man.
Do you know the muffin man who lives in Drury Lane?”

Not sure about the muffin man, but we’re certainly glad we had a close encounter with coffee and brunch at Drury Lane.

Drury Lane

The Coffee Collective,
