Sometimes the best things are truly saved for last. We have been to Singapore many a time, what with one of us having permanent resident status at the island nation (guess which one?) and all the cafés that seem to be popping up.
Most of the cafés we have visited tended to be hipster-ish or kopitiam-retro-chic or just plain visually dazzling. The coffees? Always a decent cup, to be fair, though none has really wowed us yet. Till now.
We have heard about Jewel Coffee from our fellow caffeine-addicts cum café-hoppers, but its location in the CBD always made us wonder if the market there would even appreciate specialty coffee. The shop itself is certainly unpretentious in its furnishing; the folks efficient without being overly gregarious nor inattentive; in short, there is nothing to prepare us for our first sip.
Devil’s brewed coffee, a Sidamo Ethiopia, is astonishing: lightly acidic with rich floral notes that would wake up even the most sleep-deprived financial analyst. My espresso, what can I say? The best cup I have yet in Singapore. ‘Nuff said.
A humble-looking café for sure, but all the more a pleasant surprise and resounding success for it.
