Loysel’s Toy, Singapore

By Kenny Mah and CK Lim

Coffee deserves some whimsy.

Not all Singaporean cafés are hipster paradises. The community-driven Loysel’s Toy has a bucolic feel unusual for the bustling metropolis; there are even commuter bicycles available for rental!

This cosy café located along the Kallang Riverside Park is named after Edward Loysel de Santais, the engineer who created the world’s first commercial coffee machine. Debuting at the 1855 Paris Exposition, the machine made over 1,000 cups of coffee an hour, a feat unheard of in that day.

The inventor’s “toy” subsequently became the basis for modern-day espresso machines. One of the bespoke blends at Loysel’s Toy is called 1,000 Cups in honour of that achievement. They are serious about coffee here as Loysel’s Toy is part of coffee company Papa Palheta’s mini-empire that includes Chye Seng Huat Hardware in Singapore and Pulp in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur.

Whether it’s a good cuppa or some brunch staples you are after, Loysel’s Toy is a nice getaway from the skyscrapers and shopaholics. Sweet.

Loysel’s Toy
Edward Loysel de Santais,

the bicycles are cute! i wonder if i can still ride one … i haven’t been on a bicycle since 2002! but S$30 for rental per day is probably too much for our malaysian ringgit 😀

also like the christmas wreath decoration … only 97/98 more days until december 25! 🙂
