Roots Coffee Roasters, Bangkok

By Kenny Mah and CK Lim

Coffee goes back to our roots.

One of our favourite cafés when we visited Bangkok earlier this year was Roast Coffee & Eatery. From the ambiance and service to the excellent food and coffee, what was there not to like?

This round we learned that their HQ – literally where the beans are roasted and their pastries are baked, a roastery cum central kitchen – is open to the public on weekends as a coffee bar.

It’s a simple set up with plenty of wood used in the décor (they use a local carpenter who makes furniture from rescued wood). No nonsense, very different from Roast but beautiful in its own way all the same.

We order a little of everything. A flat white and an espresso made using their Bruna house blend (40% honey-processed Thai Prao District, 40% Brazil Carmo de Minas Fazenda Serrado, 20% Guatemala Huehuetenango Finca Injertal). We also had the Guatemala as a pour over and a cold brew Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Kochere.

All decent but the highlight must surely be the cold brew Yirgacheffe. Floral and tea-like, with a light acidity. Delicious. Perfect for sipping slowly on a warm, sunny weekend.

There’s no cashier; you are welcomed to leave what you desire in their “honesty box” though 100 baht for coffee and 50 baht per pastry is recommended. Pay more or less depending on your satisfaction; we think most customers will depart as happy as we did.

Roast

Espresso,
Roots

It’s secret barista code.

… just kidding. (Though not entirely.) 😉

My guess only the café folks would know for sure. Do drop them a line at their Facebook page (link provided at the end of the post.)

The Thais are amazing folks, Xiaoluan. Friendly, warm and generous. The owner, Varatt Vichit-Vadakan or simply Tae, told me that initially it was a really small operation so they didn’t have enough hands to man a cashier, hence the idea for an honesty box or jar. I think it’s great!

Ah, all the more reason we need to come up with a Bangkok café guide for you to explore all the great coffee spots in the Thai capital! Watch out for it! 😉
